Summary

Mrs。 March by Virginia Feito is a 2021 Liveright publication。I have been wildly curious about this book, so I stopped the presses and squeezed it into my reading schedule。 Honestly, it was impossible to get a real grasp on what to expect, I just knew the story was cray-cray, and to be ready for one dark, twisted journey inside the mind of Mrs。 March。 The book, though I never noticed a specific year mentioned, appears to be set sometime in the sixties- I’m guessing。 Mrs。 March’s husband, George i Mrs。 March by Virginia Feito is a 2021 Liveright publication。I have been wildly curious about this book, so I stopped the presses and squeezed it into my reading schedule。 Honestly, it was impossible to get a real grasp on what to expect, I just knew the story was cray-cray, and to be ready for one dark, twisted journey inside the mind of Mrs。 March。 The book, though I never noticed a specific year mentioned, appears to be set sometime in the sixties- I’m guessing。 Mrs。 March’s husband, George is a writer and has just released a new novel that everyone is talking about。 Mrs。 March is taken aback when an offhand remark suggests her husband patterned a character in his new novel after her。 Mrs。 March is absolutely mortified, as the character in question is an unattractive prostitute!! From there, the reader has a front row seat to Mrs。 March’s unraveling。 Mrs。 March is by turns both sympathetic and despicable。 She’s buried behind her husband’s success, her identity tied to his, and I wondered if this was why Mrs。 March’s first name was never used。 She is swallowed up by George’s larger than life persona, by appearances, and perceptions。 Yet, in her madness, she seems determined to step out his shadow, to break free from her prison- but George must be villainized, so that her actions are justified。 Honestly, it’s almost impossible to explain the situation without either giving everything away or sounding completely incoherent。 Suffice it to say, this is a wickedly brilliant debut。 Be warned, though, the conclusion is ambiguous, but I don’t think I’d want it any other way。 Someday I’ll have to re-read this one because I’m sure I’ve missed some nuances; a hindsight view would illuminate。 The author has been compared to Highsmith and Hitchcock, and Elizabeth Moss is begging to try on the role of Mrs。 March- so there you go- that’s should be enough information to give you a prod in the right direction。 4 stars 。。。more

The first few chapters were difficult to get through, but once I got past them it was an excellent read。 It faltered slightly towards the end, though it did pick back up again。 Overall, I loved Mrs March。 I think she's an excellent character that made for a brilliant novel。 The first few chapters were difficult to get through, but once I got past them it was an excellent read。 It faltered slightly towards the end, though it did pick back up again。 Overall, I loved Mrs March。 I think she's an excellent character that made for a brilliant novel。 。。。more

A stylish, elegantly written novel featuring a strange, often pathetic, sometimes deeply unsettling yet ultimately compelling female protagonist。 Though difficult to read at times, this book was also hard to put down。

Sylvia

This was not a pleasant read。 I usually like the trope of an unreliable narrator, but in this case the narrator is both unlikeable and clearly mad。 Watching Mrs。 March deteriorate over the course of the book was difficult and also very repetitive。 The actual writing is fine but the characters and plot were lacking。

This started out as a novel of manners; the observation of a bored and insecure housewife in perhaps mid century era。 But as it evolved into a psychological mystery, the writing and character development got less precise and so abstract as to leave me skimming until the end。 Disappointed。

Isabella Jorgensen

It was really disappointing。 The beginning was promising, but the author’s style reminded me of a bad Djuna Barnes rip off。 She references Rebecca, Gaslight, Kafka… but it goes nowhere。 If there had been an interesting twist, I would have felt less ripped off, but it just gets increasingly grotesque as the main character loses it more and more。

Sue

The main character is a very paranoid wife of a famous author who hallucinates and becomes unraveled as the story unfolds。 It made me more uncomfortable as I turned the pages waiting to see what was true versus imagined in the plot。

Judith Dawkins

I slogged through this book。 It was exhausting。

Okay, so, I guess that psychological thrillers might not be my thing, but I have read this genre in the past and enjoyed it。 I want the ending to be worth my time in reading/listening to the book, and I didn't get that from this book。Ironically, this book was recommended by an author I like, but now that I have gone back to find their recommendation, it seems to have been deleted。 And that makes me sound like the paranoid Mrs。 March。。。 Okay, so, I guess that psychological thrillers might not be my thing, but I have read this genre in the past and enjoyed it。 I want the ending to be worth my time in reading/listening to the book, and I didn't get that from this book。Ironically, this book was recommended by an author I like, but now that I have gone back to find their recommendation, it seems to have been deleted。 And that makes me sound like the paranoid Mrs。 March。。。 。。。more

I am not even sure I can put into words what I feel about this book。 The longer I read, the less I liked Mrs。 March, just like the rest of the opinions in the book。 I had anxiety reading about this woman。 I read reviews after having read the book myself to see if my experience with the book was similar to others。 I am not even really able to explain this book other than the slow unraveling of Mrs。 March was anxiety inducing。 There were clues about her earlier years but some things were never rea I am not even sure I can put into words what I feel about this book。 The longer I read, the less I liked Mrs。 March, just like the rest of the opinions in the book。 I had anxiety reading about this woman。 I read reviews after having read the book myself to see if my experience with the book was similar to others。 I am not even really able to explain this book other than the slow unraveling of Mrs。 March was anxiety inducing。 There were clues about her earlier years but some things were never really laid out which spurred my brain into overdrive trying to decipher her past。 If you are looking for a book that causes you to feel, this might be it。 。。。more

A slow-burn psychological thriller。 Loved it through the very end。 Some may not appreciate the way the narration inches forward but I appreciated how well it set the tone of the book。

A little slow to get started but the ending redeemed herself - that was meta AF

It starts like a modern-day MRS。 DALLOWAY, as Mrs。 March (we do not learn her first name until the very last page) sets about throwing the perfect book party for her husband's latest novel, a runaway best-seller。 She's a Park Avenue doyenne - rich husband, shops at the right stores, sets a lovely table, lives in her successful husband's shadow。 Nof for nothing is she always Mrs。 Marsh, even in what seems like today - more or less。 They have a housekeeper-cook, and she lives like a 50s housewife It starts like a modern-day MRS。 DALLOWAY, as Mrs。 March (we do not learn her first name until the very last page) sets about throwing the perfect book party for her husband's latest novel, a runaway best-seller。 She's a Park Avenue doyenne - rich husband, shops at the right stores, sets a lovely table, lives in her successful husband's shadow。 Nof for nothing is she always Mrs。 Marsh, even in what seems like today - more or less。 They have a housekeeper-cook, and she lives like a 50s housewife dream, shopping for provisions in her fur and mint-green gloves, taking cabs everywhere。But then she starts to hear the whispers, that her husband's latest novel is based on her - and the heroine is a used-up whore。 Mrs。 March has long ago given up actually reading her husband's work, of course。 But the social stigma unhinges her。 Her manicured life starts to fall apart。It's unclear at times what's real and what may be paranoid delusion, but Mrs。 March is clearly having a significant mental breakdown。 Her fever dreams start a shocking downward spiral。 I can't tell you more。Author Virginia Feito didn't grow up on the Upper East Side, but she seems to know the territory intimately。 Her insights into Mrs。 March's tortured psyche are utterly absorbing; I stayed home all day to finish it。A great read。 。。。more

Mrs March’s mind is a very disquieting place to be—she’s so exhaustingly anxious about appearances at all times—but Feito made it worthwhile。 The book clicked for me when Mrs March was staring at the fish on her plate and it blinked at her。 Then I knew we were in for a wild ride, and I was not disappointed。

This book was bizarre and disturbing。 I probably wouldn’t recommend it to anyone。 I truly couldn’t figure out how old Mrs。 March was supposed to be, and what time period this book was set in。 I saw this book a bunch of times at B&N and the cover was interesting, so I finally bought it during their hardcover sale。 Not a *complete* waste of money, but there are definitely better books out there。

Moira

When does this book take place? The blurb says 1960s, but many details (recording something from TV, Rubik’s cube, string cheese…) make me think it was the 80s。 I spent too much time trying to figure out when。 I also considered stopping multiple times, and I’m glad I didn’t, because there was finally something interesting in the last 10 pages。

Morgan

3。5 stars。 Like watching a train crash。

Lynn

I am disappointed in myself that this book cover and title, reviews and Virginia Woolf symbolism seduced me into buying and reading this book。 And I am shocked that there is enough meat here for a movie! The wonders of marketing。 A poor attempt at recreating the sinister, brooding writing of Patricia Highsmith。 Makes me wonder about the hype machine。

Maureen

Very well written and intriguing yet also exceedingly creepy。

Katie

3。5 stars rounded up。This was a fun, rather than horribly disturbing, kind of weird。 Watch Mrs。 March unravel。

Veronica Riepe

I found this book to be a bit chaotic which at times made it feel slow or repetitive。 Maybe I just wasn’t in the right frame of mind to really enjoy it。

Nina

Boring, it gets more interesting at the last quarter of the book, but the ending is still anticlimactic。I like weird books, sinister and gory, but this one left me empty… so many questions left unresolved, untold that I ask myself what was the point。

Alison

I got about 20% of the way into this and couldn't handle the main character's complete lack of confidence in herself。 The main action of the plot hadn't really started yet, and I wasn't interested enough to keep reading until it did。 I got about 20% of the way into this and couldn't handle the main character's complete lack of confidence in herself。 The main action of the plot hadn't really started yet, and I wasn't interested enough to keep reading until it did。 。。。more

Lot of hype and talk about this book, perhaps one of the better known debut of last year。 Hollywood film in the offing if the talk is to be believed。 As such had high hopes。 I was not entirely disappointed, this is undoubtedly a good book。 The writing is excellent, I believe the author has written other stories just not a novel。 You could tell as the writing very accomplished, it was moody, atmospheric, engaging and drew you into the protagonist paranoid world very well。 However, it is not a gre Lot of hype and talk about this book, perhaps one of the better known debut of last year。 Hollywood film in the offing if the talk is to be believed。 As such had high hopes。 I was not entirely disappointed, this is undoubtedly a good book。 The writing is excellent, I believe the author has written other stories just not a novel。 You could tell as the writing very accomplished, it was moody, atmospheric, engaging and drew you into the protagonist paranoid world very well。 However, it is not a great book where the plot is concerned in my view。 I had worked out what was very likely to ( and did ) happen by about a third the way in。 So, an average mark for a just a bit above average book when all told。 。。。more
